F9 Teams is working with the Air Force to support Kessel Run, the Air Force’s flagship software development organization, to rapidly modernize the way the Air Force builds, deploys, and operate software in support of Airmen around the globe.

F9 Teams is seeking a Principal Platform Engineer to lead Kessel Run’s Platform Engineering team, responsible for the development, security, and operations of Kessel Run’s global runtime platform. In this role, you will help lead a team of Airmen and contractors to deliver a highly available runtime platform as a service (PaaS) that support rapid application delivery and operation. You will be successful in this role by continuously supporting software engineering teams, reducing their mean time to recovery, and change failure rate while maintaining high platform availability (99.99%) for our service members around the globe.

  • Contribute to the development of a runtime platform that is well positioned to revolutionize the way the Air Force delivers software
  • Focus on automating processes that have never before been automated, technology delivery and instrumentation workflows that span classified and unclassified networks
  • Define and lead the development of new services that ship with the platform and reduce the complexity that the teams building on the platform have to manage


  • Possess an active TOP SECRET security clearance
  • Experience automating the management of common Platform as a Service (PaaS) frameworks, such as Cloud Foundry or OpenShift
  • Experience managing AWS GovCloud using automation
  • Experience building and operating multi-tenant services that support software engineering organizations comprised of 100’s of engineers and 10’s of teams (eg. Event Streams, Databases, Time Series Data/Analytics, etc…)
  • Deep understanding of the pitfalls and common mistakes that are experienced when running JVM based applications in an operational environment

Nice to haves:

  • Experience working through and automating the Authority to Operate processes required to ship software in the Department of Defense
  • Experience defining clear Service Level Objectives
  • Experience with continuous delivery technologies (eg. Jenkins, TravisCI, CircleCI, and Pivotal Concourse)
  • Experience building and operating high scale container based application and service deployments (eg. Kubernetes)
